Looking for help for low self confidence, I found Reach. Their website (www.thereachapproach.co.uk) was very helpful and I realised that one to one counselling was a possibility. So I plucked up the courage to ring and I got an appointment with Jo Kilburn and began a journey of positive change.
My family life was very dysfunctional...not that I realised this at the time.
I thought that most families had problems of one type or another and that I should be grateful to have a roof over my head and food on the table. This was the message that I heard frequently at home.
It was later on in my life when I realised the profound effect of the shouting and arguing that I grew up with. I hated conflict of any kind, and rather than engage in an argument would just put up with all kinds of abuse, mental and physical. I allowed myself to become a victim for fear of confrontation.
Slowly, and with support from Jo, I began to respect and believe in myself and learnt to communicate without fear of repercussion. It was her kindness, knowledge and support that brought me to a greater understanding of myself. Alongside our sessions she encouraged me to listen to the many MP3s that Reach have produced to help to reinforce my new, more positive self-image.
I particularly love the one called Being The Best You Can Be – and also The Power of Choice. I had felt I had no choices but now I realize I can actually choose to make my life what I want it to be. It feels like a miracle to me.
